Description
Italian Mid-Century Seating by Gae Aulenti
The Stringa seating system was designed by Gae Aulenti in 1962 for Poltronova. A bold exploration of Italian Postwar design, it combines a tubular chrome frame with suspended black leather cushions, supported by felt padding. Each cushion is fastened to the frame with leather straps, creating a distinct architectural character that reflects Aulentis approach to design as both structural and sculptural.
Modular and Avant-Garde Design
This set includes a three-seater sofa, two armchairs, and a coffee table. The sleek chrome frame and deep leather seats highlight the interplay between industrial materials and luxurious comfort. Aulentis design philosophy balanced functionality with a conceptual vision of furniture as an element of architectural space, making the Stringa both a seating system and a work of art.
Gae Aulenti and Italian Postmodernism
Gae Aulenti (19272012) was one of Italys most important architects and designers, internationally celebrated for projects such as the Muse dOrsay in Paris. The Stringa exemplifies her role in the Avant-Garde Postmodern movement, which sought to move beyond Modernist minimalism by reintroducing history, narrative, and bold form into design. Produced by Poltronova, a leading Italian manufacturer of the 1960s, this set remains a rare and collectible example of early Postmodern Italian furniture.
