Description

Original Marcel Breuer Wassily chair for Knoll with fabric straps and tubular frame.
Mid-Century Modern authentic Wassily B3 chair designed by Marcel Breuer and made by Knoll, 1960s.

The “Wassily” chair is a modernist icon designed by Hungarian-born architect and designer Marcel Breuer in 1925-1926 while he was teaching at the Bauhaus, a pioneering German design school. The chair was initially known as the Model B3 chair, but later became popularly known as the “Wassily” chair in reference to the painter Wassily Kandinsky, who was a colleague of Breuer at the Bauhaus.

The “Wassily” chair is a lounge chair that is known for its simple, geometric form and innovative use of materials. The frame of the chair is made from tubular steel, which was a relatively new material at the time, and is designed to give the impression that the seat and backrest are floating in space. The leather straps that support the seat and backrest are also a distinctive feature of the chair’s design.

Breuer’s design was inspired by his interest in the aesthetics of modern industrial production, and the “Wassily” chair exemplifies his belief that design should be functional, affordable, and accessible to the masses.
